Never did I picture myself owning a Z31, especially a slick top 200ZR. One of only 1044 slick top 200ZRs (164 were 2+2) makes this an extremely rare car. Enthusiasts scoff at 2+2 Z31s, but in my option the long uninterrupted roof with the slick top makes this a very nicely proportioned car. Not only that, this car having factory RB20DET power makes it even more special.
Keeping things oldschool and simple is the the theme with this build. When I bought the car it needed a lot of maintenance and some love poured into it. I addressed the major issues then brought my Wangan Midnight visions to life. I embraced the retro vibes of the Z31 and kept everything period correct on the outside, but gave it a modern touch in the handling department. The engine is still factory (for now) and has been fine putting around town with.
Well, sometimes stock is just fine... said no one ever. Having a stock Red Top is a very fun learning experience as it provides me with more hands on knowledge of these engines, but this car needs more power. As the car sits right now the only major mods are the Kakimoto exhaust and a new clutch with light weight flywheel. Those small changes liven up the engine a bit. Honestly this car has been reliable and I have other cars that scratch my "go fast" itch so tearing the engine apart has not been very appealing to me. I have dreams of an insane RB20 build to shove under the hood, but I am not sure how soon that will happen. For now a slightly larger turbo and upping the boost a bit is the direction I am going before a full engine build.
While I have yet to touch the engine, I have installed some very nice goodies on the underside. Powertrix coilovers and full Apex Engineering front suspension arms provide some amazing handling and give the car a very nice stance. The bus sized steering wheel make this car super fun to drive on the highway and in the mountains. It has a very oldschool feel yet you are completely in control. I also absolutely love the OEM Recaro seats. They are comfortable for road trips and hold you in just the right amount for some spirited driving.
I have also kept the exterior very simple as the car would have been in the 80s. I have a Shiro Style front lip, OEM rear mud flaps and 2+0 side skirts I had to extend because they do not make 2+2 "skinny body" side skirts. I knew a set of mono block wheels was needed and what better than a set of classic AVS VS6 wheels. I do things with intention and am very happy with how this car looks. Simple is truly best.
