These are the most frequently used torque specs and clearances on RB20DETs. Always follow the recommended OEM or aftermarket installation instructions.

RB20 Head Torque and Clearances

Cam Cap Bolts

OEM Torque:

0.92~1.2 kg*m / 6.65~8.67 ft*lb

Notes:

Tighten from outside to center in multiple stages. Be cautious and clean bolts before installation.

Head Studs

OEM Torque:

9.6 kg*m / 70 ft*lb

ARP 8740 Torque (202-4301):

11 kg*m / 80 ft*lb

(Tools - 1/2" 12 point socket & 3/16 allen)

ARP 2000 Torque (202-4309):

12.45 kg*m / 90 ft*lb

(Tools - 5/8" 12 point socket & 3/16 allen)

Notes:

Tighten from center out in 2 stages to 50 ft*lbs, loosen then tighten to final torque in 3 stages. Follow ARP installation instructions below.

Cam Pulley

OEM Torque:

1.4-1.9 kg*m / 10-14 ft*lb

RB20 Bottom End Torque and Clearances

OEM Top Ring Gap

OEM Clearance:

0.22~0.39 mm / 0.008~0.015 in

Notes:

Stamped mark facing upwards.

Hastings Rings the top ring is the barrel (square ring with no mark)

OEM Second Ring Gap

OEM Clearance:

0.19~0.45 mm / 0.007~0.018 in

Notes:

Stamped mark facing upwards.

Hastings Rings the second ring is the taper (inside chamfer with mark)

OEM Oil Ring Gap

OEM Clearance:

0.20~0.76 mm / 0.008~0.030 in

Notes:

Do not overlap the ends, the tips are butted together (vv vv).

Supertech Ring Gap (std bore)

Street Clearance:

0.350 mm / 0.0138 in

Moderate Turbo:

0.381 mm / 0.015 in

Drag:

0.430 mm / 0.017 in

Race Only:

0.510 mm / 0.020 in

Second Ring:

Multiply top ring gap by 1.25

Oil Ring:

Minimum Gap 0.381 mm / 0.015 in

Notes:

These rings are for Supertech pistons only. Will not work with other pistons.

OEM Torque:

4.9~5.5 kg*m / 36~40 ft*lb

OEM Clearance:

0.02~0.047 mm / 0.0007~0.0018 in

Notes:

Tighten from center out in 2 or 3 stages.

ARP Main Studs / Bearings

ARP Torque (202-5403):

8.3 kg*m / 60 ft*lb

(Tools - 16mm 12 point socket)

OEM Clearance:

0.02~0.047 mm / 0.0007~0.0018 in

Notes:

Follow ARP installation instructions below. It is also recommended to line hone crank and double check clearances as the block can distort with more clamping torque on the girdle.
