Rb20s are generally extremely reliable engines when maintained properly with quality parts. That being said these are 30+ year old engines that are generally pushed beyond their intended capabilities with unknown pasts. I highly recommend replacing or thoroughly inspecting any used parts or engines as they may be prone to failure due to age or condition.
This handbook includes parts and maintenance items that I personally recommend or have used on my personal engines as well as information and specs I have used to build my engines. There are a million different ways to do things and brands to buy from, but I believe these are the best techniques and parts.

Oil:
~4.5 Qts Oil Capacity for RB20DET
~4.0 Qts Oil Capacity for Non Turbo
Recommend 10w30 full synthetic for a freshly rebuilt engine
Hot climates or an engine with lot's of kms run 10w40 / 10w50 full synthetic
OEM service manual recommends 7.5w30 oil
Note: Engine Oil weight is mostly based on what clearances the engine was built to. The rule of thumb is the thinnest oil that maintains adequate oil pressure at operating temperature. If the engine is stock (or rebuilt within OEM bearing clearances) the OEM weight (or close to) it is what you would run. With older seals or a hotter climate a little heavier wont hurt anything. You should only run a significantly heavier oil if you have purposely built the engine to a looser bearing tolerance. For any oil questions reference the 540 - RAT page.

Any KA24 or VG30 oil filter will work from an auto parts store

Note: There is a No.1 Cylinder primary wire (black wire) to loop the timing light through near the connector on the igniter located on the top rear of the coil pack cover.
